Bergen, Bryggen
Norway
Bryggen is the old wharf on the east side of Bergen's harbour in western Norway. From the 14th to the 18th century German merchants of the Hanseatic League ran a trading office here, dealing mainly in dried fish from the north. The long, narrow wooden houses standing gable to gable along the quay were rebuilt after a great fire in 1702, following the old layout, and Bryggen has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.
Bergen lies between steep hills and the sea and is known as one of the rainiest cities in Europe, with more than 2,000 mm of rain in a typical year. Rain here is a normal part of daily life.
