Low Tatras ridge
Slovakia
The Low Tatras run west to east through central Slovakia, between the Váh and Hron valleys, and their main ridge stays above the tree line for long stretches. The highest peak is Ďumbier at 2,043 m, with Chopok, 2,024 m, close by and reached by cable cars from Jasná and from the south side. A long ridge trail links the summits over grass, dwarf pine and rocky knolls.
The range is protected as Low Tatras National Park. On the open ridge there is nothing to stop the wind, and the weather changes fast: fog can close in within minutes, rain comes sideways, and summer storms make the high crest dangerous. Huts along the ridge offer shelter.
