Lviv, Rynok Square
Ukraine
Rynok Square is the market square at the heart of Lviv's old town in western Ukraine. Its four sides are lined with 44 historic houses, Renaissance, Baroque and later, many with carved portals and painted façades. In the middle stands the town hall, rebuilt in the 1830s after the old tower collapsed, with a tower 65 m high. Four fountains with figures from classical mythology stand at the corners.
The historic centre of Lviv has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998. Lviv is one of the wetter cities in Ukraine, with frequent rain in every season. Then the cobbles shine, umbrellas crowd under the arcades and the café windows steam up.
