Štrbské Pleso is a glacial lake on the southern side of the High Tatras, lying at 1,346 m above sea level. A moraine left by an old glacier holds the water back, and spruce forest grows down to most of the shore. The lake gave its name to the resort around it, which began with a single house built in 1872 and later hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships of 1970.

Weather here turns quickly: summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms off the peaks, and low cloud can hide the ridge above the water for days in autumn. In steady rain the surface goes grey and quiet, and the smell of wet spruce hangs over the path.
