Prague, Charles Bridge
Czechia
Charles Bridge crosses the Vltava in Prague between the Old Town and the Lesser Town. Work on it began in 1357 under King Charles IV, with Peter Parler as the builder, and was finished in the early 15th century. The stone bridge is about 516 m long and rests on 16 arches. Thirty statues of saints line its sides, most of them added around 1700 and now replaced by copies.
Gothic towers guard both ends, the Old Town Bridge Tower on one side and two towers of different ages on the Lesser Town side. Prague has a moderate climate with summer showers and grey autumns. On rainy days the crowds thin out, and the wet paving reflects the lamps.
