Monteverde Cloud Forest
Costa Rica
Monteverde lies in the Tilarán mountains of northwestern Costa Rica, along the Continental Divide. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, founded in 1972, protects more than 10,000 hectares of forest. Moist trade winds from the Caribbean rise over the mountains and form almost constant cloud, so the trees are covered with mosses, ferns, bromeliads and orchids. The area is home to hundreds of bird species, among them the resplendent quetzal.
Monteverde is also where the golden toad was last seen, in 1989; it is now considered extinct. Rain and drizzle are common through most of the year. Under the canopy the light is green and dim, the paths are muddy, and water drips from every leaf.
