Glencoe, Scottish Highlands
Scotland
Glencoe is a deep glacial valley in the western Highlands of Scotland, crossed by the A82 road and the River Coe. Steep mountains of volcanic rock line it on both sides. Buachaille Etive Mòr stands guard at its eastern end, and the three ridges known as the Three Sisters reach down from Bidean nam Bian, at 1,150 m the highest peak in Argyll.
The glen is remembered for the massacre of 13 February 1692, when government soldiers killed members of the MacDonald clan who had given them shelter. The western Highlands are among the wettest parts of Britain. Rain can last for days, cloud hides the summits, and countless streams pour down the slopes.
