Spiš Castle stands on a travertine hill above the town of Spišské Podhradie in eastern Slovakia. Its walls enclose more than four hectares, which makes it one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe. Building began in the 12th century, and over the following centuries it grew into a chain of courtyards and fortifications. A fire in 1780 left it in ruins, and parts of it have since been restored.

Since 1993 the castle has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, together with the nearby ecclesiastical town of Spišská Kapitula and, since 2009, Levoča. The hill is open to every wind, and in rain the pale ruins show from far across the fields under low cloud.
