Slanica Island, Orava Reservoir
Slovakia
Slanica Island rises from the Orava Reservoir in northern Slovakia. The reservoir was built between 1941 and 1953 and covers about 35 square kilometres, and five villages disappeared under its water. Of Slanica only the hill with its church remained, now the largest island on the lake. The church, built in the 1760s and rebuilt in classicist style in 1843, holds an exhibition of folk art, and folk sculptures stand outside, so the place is known as the Slanica Island of Art.
Slanica was the birthplace of Anton Bernolák, who in the 18th century wrote the first codified form of literary Slovak. Boats carry visitors across in summer. Orava is cool and often cloudy, and rain sweeps across the open water in long grey bands.
