Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's main business and entertainment districts. Its railway station is counted as the busiest in the world, used by millions of passengers every day. West of the station rise office towers and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, while on the east side the streets of Kabukichō and the narrow lanes of small bars stay lit with signs late into the night.

Tokyo is wet for much of the year. The rainy season usually runs from early June to mid-July, and typhoons can bring heavy downpours in late summer and autumn. On a rainy night the neon colours spread over the wet asphalt, and transparent umbrellas fill the crossings.
