Popradské Pleso lies at 1,494 m in Mengusovská dolina, a narrow valley on the south side of the High Tatras. Like many Tatra lakes it was formed by a glacier and is dammed by moraine. A mountain hotel stands on its shore, and the lake is a crossing point of the Tatranská magistrála trail and a starting point for hikes towards Rysy.

A short walk above the water is the Symbolic Cemetery, founded in 1936, with painted wooden crosses and plaques for people who died in the mountains. Rain is common here in summer, often as afternoon storms, and cloud drops low between the valley walls, leaving only the dark water and the scree slopes in sight.
