Bratislava, St. Michael's Gate
Slovakia
Michael's Gate is the only one of Bratislava's medieval town gates still standing. Its tower dates from the 14th century and got its present Baroque top in the 1750s, when a copper statue of St. Michael fighting the dragon was set on the roof, 51 m above the street. Inside is a small museum of weapons and the old fortifications, and under the passage a plaque in the pavement marks distances from Bratislava to capitals around the world.
Michalská Street runs up to the gate past cafés and narrow burgher houses. Bratislava gets fairly little rain over the year, but summer often brings short heavy thunderstorms, and then the wet cobbles reflect the lit shop windows and the tower.
