Zelené Pleso, High Tatras
Slovakia
Zelené Pleso, sometimes called Zelené pleso Kežmarské, is a small glacial lake at about 1,550 m in the eastern High Tatras. Its name means Green Lake, after the colour of its shallow water. Above it rises the north face of Malý Kežmarský štít, one of the tallest rock walls in the Tatras and a classic climbing ground. A mountain hut on the shore has offered shelter to walkers and climbers for more than a century.
The valley is open to the north, so cloud often fills it while the southern side of the range stays clear. In rain, water streams down the gullies of the wall, mist hangs halfway up the rock, and fine ripples spread over the green surface.
