The Old Quarter of Hanoi lies just north of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. For centuries it was a district of craftsmen and traders, and many streets still carry the word Hàng, meaning goods, followed by what was once sold there, such as silk, silver or paper. Narrow tube houses stand shoulder to shoulder, with shops on the ground floor, and small temples and communal houses hide behind ornate gates.

Hanoi has a humid subtropical climate. Most rain falls between May and September, often as sudden heavy downpours, while late winter and spring bring a fine, persistent drizzle. When it rains the scooters keep moving under plastic ponchos, and the lanterns light the wet street.
