rain

Skalnaté Pleso is a small glacial lake at 1,751 m on the slopes below Lomnický štít, the second highest peak of the High Tatras. A cable car climbs here from Tatranská Lomnica and continues to the summit at 2,634 m. Beside the lake stands an astronomical observatory, opened in 1943, where astronomers discovered several comets in the following decades.

The lake sits in a wide hollow of boulders and dwarf pine, above the forest line. The weather is harsher than in the valleys below: cloud often sits on the slope, and wind drives the rain across the open ground. On such days the lake, the observatory domes and the cable car station all fade into the same grey.
