Veľký Rozsutec, Little Fatra
Slovakia
Veľký Rozsutec rises to 1,610 m in the Little Fatra mountains of northern Slovakia, above the village of Terchová. It is built of limestone and dolomite, which gives it its steep, broken outline, unlike the rounded grassy ridges around it. The peak and its slopes form a national nature reserve, rich in rare and endemic plants, and some trails use chains.
The climb is best known from the ridge to the south, where the summit appears as a sharp tooth above the forest. Little Fatra gets frequent rain and fog, especially in summer storms and autumn. Cloud can wrap the peak in minutes and lift again just as fast, and the wet limestone turns slippery.
