Edinburgh, Victoria Street
Scotland
Victoria Street curves down from George IV Bridge to the Grassmarket in Edinburgh's Old Town. It was laid out between 1829 and 1834 as part of a scheme to improve the routes through the crowded old city, and named after Queen Victoria in 1837, the year she came to the throne. Its lower side is a row of small shops with brightly painted fronts, while above them runs a raised walkway, Victoria Terrace.
The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh together form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Edinburgh's weather comes off the sea: rain is frequent though rarely very heavy, and a cold sea fog called haar can roll in from the Firth of Forth. In the wet the coloured shopfronts glow against the dark stone.
